Brick offers a durable, timeless, and stylish look for your home’s exterior. And yet, you may feel that the style is a little too limiting; after all, it’s beautiful, but a bit unchanging. We all get the bug occasionally to try something new around our home! So, when it comes to exterior painting, you might be asking yourself that all-important question: can I paint my brick? In short, you can! Here are a few tips that will get you started in the right direction.

How Do You Paint Brick?

Before you grab that good ole bucket of paint and start erasing the red, there is another important question for you to ask yourself: are you sure? The reason why this tiny question is so important is because regardless of whether you are a professional painter or have never held a brush, removing paint from brick is virtually impossible. So, choose carefully!

With that said, here are a few tips for successfully painting brick:

  1. Clean the bricks- This is always an important step, whether your project involves interior or exterior painting. It is best to hose your bricks with a garden hose because a pressure washer is a bit too powerful unless you are extremely careful.
  2. Let the brick fully dry
  3. Inspect your siding- If your brick has large pores, or gaps, paint it with block filler before priming.
  4. Use primer on your bricks- Use a latex masonry primer. This will also help to seal up the surface before painting.
  5. Paint your brick- I recommend that you invest in a high-quality, exterior latex/acrylic paint.

Tips for Painting Brick

You can use a brush for paint application, but in all reality that is a difficult route to take. There are so many nooks and crannies that unless you really enjoy dabbing paint, a paint sprayer will be much more efficient.
